What are grain and silage trailers and what are they used for?

Grain and silage trailers are transportation trailers designed for moving high quantities of crops or silage. While moving grain and silage require slightly different requirements, both of these roles are often covered by one trailer chassis that can be tailored to suit both purposes.

Grain transport trailers move dense, grain-based crops such as wheat, barley and oats between the field and storage during harvest time. They are built to safely handle heavy, dense payloads of crops with the functionality to cleanly offload them as well as rollover sheets to protect crops during transport. Silage trailers, on the other hand, transport dry silage (grass, whole-crop or maize) that is used as forage feed for livestock. In contrast to grain, silage is a low-density crop that takes up more cubic space, whether that’s moving it from forage harvesting or to livestock fields, but similarly requires clean offloading.

Both functions require heavy-duty steel trailer bodies and high-tipping functionality for offloading, while silage trailers need additional carrying space to accommodate the low-density qualities of forage feed.
