Have had a very good working relationsgip with Tristian for several years when hiring equipment , usually what I want and very importantly when I want it. Excellent at calling back if he can't take the call or misses it.

FAQ's about Ploughs

Start with your conditions, then match features to suit.

Quick guide:

  • Stone content: choose auto-reset legs for stony ground to reduce stoppages; shear-bolt protection suits lighter, cleaner land.
  • Soil type and residue: pick the mouldboard shape that will invert and bury trash cleanly in your soil.
  • Tractor power and width: number of bodies and working width must match the available horsepower. As a rough rule, allow about 20–30 hp per furrow on 14–16" bodies.
  • Ease of use: hydraulic vari-width and hydraulic front-furrow make in-field adjustments quicker. Browse our Lemken ploughs and Kverneland ploughs, or read the Used Plough Buyer’s Guide for a deeper checklist.

A shear bolt is designed to snap if a leg hits an immovable object, protecting the leg and frame, and your tractor. Using the wrong grade or size can prevent it from shearing when it should, leading to expensive damage. Always replace with the manufacturer-specified bolt and torque setting. If you want fewer interruptions in stones, consider an auto-reset plough.

Ploughing completely inverts the soil, burying weeds and crop residues that shallow cultivators may leave near the surface. Used periodically, it can reduce persistent weeds such as blackgrass, reset surface compaction, and create a clean seedbed. Many farms alternate ploughing with low-disturbance systems to balance soil health and timeliness. For setup fundamentals, see our plough setup guides.

Both are correct. Plough is standard in the UK and most of the world. Plow is used in the United States and Canada.

Ploughs can be classified by:

  • Body: mouldboard or disc ploughs.
  • Turnover: conventional or reversible.
  • Mounting: semi-mounted or fully mounted.
  • Line: on-land (tractor runs on unploughed surface), in-furrow (follows previous furrow), or on-land and in-furrow (most versatile).

A plough turns and breaks the soil, bringing fresh nutrients to the surface while burying crop residues and weeds so they decompose below. Set correctly, it levels and loosens the top layer to create a clean, even seedbed that drills well, improves seed to soil contact and supports uniform emergence.

A furrow is the long, narrow trench created as the body turns the furrow slice. The adjacent ridge of turned soil is the crown. Good setup gives uniform furrows with minimal open joints.

Yes, we recommend contacting the manufacturer or brand dealer.
Our second-hand machinery doesn’t carry a manufacturer’s timed warranty, but we stand by our word. If a machine has been workshop checked and the salesperson has the confidence to tell you it’s all good, we’ll stand behind it. Ask your salesperson about the cover and aftercare available for the specific plough you’re considering.
We can arrange delivery across the UK and export worldwide, with rates and lead times confirmed at purchase. We can also provide practical setup guidance and can advise you remotely. If you need on-farm assistance, let us know and we’ll discuss the options.
Yes. We welcome part-exchange. Share the make, model, number of furrows, body type, condition, photos and location, and we’ll provide a valuation to offset against your used plough purchase.
